Latest Gas Bill Ever !!!

In March 2006, I decided to leave British Gas and move to EDF enegry.
Did all the usual, final readings etc etc, and the move went smoothly.
The final reading was taken on April 5th 2006.
Imagine my surprise this morning when I got a final gas bill from British Gas dated April 14th 2007, stating they were sorry I was leaving and I owed them £165.10 !! I telephoned them, and it is correct. They couldn't explain why it had taken over a year to issue the bill.
Is there a limit of time in which they can present these bills ? Any obscure laws I can quote to get out of paying it ???
