Help me with my pic on a macbook

Since DS upgraded my Macbook to Snow Leopard I have lost Photoshop. So I need something to replace it. Not at Photoshop prices though.
Specifically I urgently need to put a picture onto a disc, jpeg, with a blank space above with text on it, note that the text must not be on the actual image.
I could do this on my very old version of Photoshop but cannot find a way to do it on the free image editors available, so frustrating!
I can also do it on several open office applications but then cannot save it in jpeg!

PixelMator is ideal and comes with a 30 Day trial.

I know you have resolved this now - but for anyone else needing to edit a picture quickly and without having to install software - you could try the free online editors: for example - http://pixlr.com/editor/

These don't rely on any one operating system also.

Out of Interest though, why did you lose Photoshop? Was it incompatible with Snow Leopard (64 bit?), what did you upgrade from (Leopard?) and what version of Photoshop did you have installed? There's a possibility I could talk you through getting it installed/working again - providing you have the license code.

iSaving, Just found your reply so sorry for being a bit late, My version is number 8 which I think is CS 1? Yes, it is not compatable with OSX 10.8.2 which I now have on this 2009 Macbook.
