Hi Techie mates,

Just been offered a Emachines 2230 Desktop (crt screen)

with that I get two computer chairs, computer desk... (a reasonable one), Epson colour printer with extra two Cartriges.

oh yeah and 5.1 speakers and a web cam.

All for £140......

Is this worth it?

Thanks Guys.

Depends what you want to use it for. By modern standards it is pretty poor - 256mb ram, onboard graphics (no AGP slot, only PCI), 40GB hard disk, 14" monitor.

Only really suitable for surfing and emailing, at a guess.

    See specs at http://www.currys.co.uk/martprd/store/cur_page.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@2021661390.1177111318@@@@&BV_EngineID=cccjaddkjiejdehcflgceggdhhmdgmi.0&page=Product&sku=975023

Part of the Furniture Combo Breaker
If you need/want (or can flog..) all the kit, sounds like a good buy. Not a bad box if you stick more memory in - I've used a 2210 (with 1gb RAM) for photo-editing and MP3 ripping (CD drive was particularly good for that) and software development. Worked ok with a 19" LCD as well - just for business-type stuff though, never tried any games.

Kids will always tell you that they need it for homework - then they want to install and play games :)

As I said, it should be fine for surfing - but it is unlikely to play any recent games satisfactorily, as it won't meet the minimum specifications required by them.

You will probably find it difficult / expensive to upgrade, too.

My advice is to keep looking in the local free paper - you should be able to get a better specification for that price.

I can only give an opinion on the value of the computer - you will have to make your own judgement on what the desk and chairs are worth to you.

    try.
    https://www.ebuyer.com
I would have to say it will do the basics, like printing fliers, with the right software, try https://www.download.com for free/or trial software, my first pc many many moons ago, had only a 20gb HDD 128mbs ram and was pretty !!!!!! really but I could print out business cards/greeting cards/ compliment slips/ fliers on it so it served its purpose, and that cost me £300 second hand many years ago now, so if they just want it for homework/printing stuff out I would say if the furniture were up to it, then go for it, as all we will get else where is a pc and monitor for around £200-500 and LCD 15"arent that much to but nowadays around £60-70 at ebuyer
