Yes, unfortunately the bulk of my debts came from helping out family members who were always on the brink of being evicted / having the bailiffs call. Like you, it was sort of expected that we would always be able to help out, as we have two reasonable wages and try to be careful about spending.
They were genuinely short of money but it did come to the point (when I was almost £30,000 in debt) when I had to say enough is enough - give them their dues they haven't asked for money since then.
I think there comes a point when you have to start thinking about yourself - I feel that our lives are very much "on hold" until our debts are paid off. You have to start living for yourself - hard as it is, you are your priority!
