Who do I make cheque payable to?

I am right at the start of the PPI process and am trying to collect information on 3 loans and a mastercard that I have had with Yorkshire Bank in the past. At the moment, all I have is the account numbers. So I have completed the template letter for each account requesting a copy of the credit agreement and terms and conditions and will be sending them to the local branch recorded delivery. But I have a couple of questions first regarding sending the letters and the £1 cheque that you are advised to enclose:

1. Should I send all the letters for the 4 accounts together in one envelope, or send them separate?

2. If I send them all together, should I write 4 separate cheques, each for £1? Or just write one cheque for £4?

3. Who should I make the cheque/s payable to? Should I just make it out to Yorkshire Bank?

Just don't want to slow the process down by making some silly mistakes early on.

Thanks in advance.

  • If your account is closed a £1 payment won't achieve anything. If you want information on closed accounts you need to send a SAR letter which costs £10.
  • Oh right, good job I asked!

How far back does the information provided in response to a SAR letter go back? The earliest of my loans was paid off in 2001 and the most recent in 2003. I am reading that some institutions only keep records for 6 years. Does that mean I will struggle to make a claim if I don't have the paperwork?

    I'm afraid so.
You also need to have been mis-sold the PPI, it's not enough merely to have a PPI policy.
  • Do you know off the top of your head if the Yorkshire Bank keep records for longer than 6 years? I'd imagine that banks are changing their policies and dumping records older than 6 years to avoid having to provide information and thus eventually refunds?

I have no idea which individual banks ignore the FSA guidelines. You just need to be aware that if your account is closed and you no longer bank with that lender then the chances of them keeping records older than six years are very slim.

Regardless, if you don't have valid mis-selling reasons, you can't have a successful complaint.
  • At this point I don't even know if I have ever paid for PPI. However, I don't recall ever discussing it with anyone when my loan was taken out. I guess for £10 I will give the SAR letter a try and see if I get any information back.

    Thanks for the advice.
