Whats the best way to transfer song files on my ipod to my HD?

My hard drive gave up and I'm a couple of months behind on my back ups. I have looked on the web and there seem to be a number of ways to transfer files from my ipod to my replacement HD but none of them particularly clear. Has anyone done it and can they recommend a fool proof way of doing it?

Does anyone know the best way to do this? Friend has stuff on ipod that i want on mine, so would like to copy to laptop (vista) and then to my own ipod.

If its just music you want to transfer from your Ipod back to your PC then try these
