The MSE site is an interesting example... here's a quote from Martin Lewis about it's history:
" ... I set up an email list built around a basic homepage so anyone could get the info.

The email grew quickly and soon hit 1,000 recipients. I decided the site had potential to help me promote my journalism work, and paid a web designer in Uzbekistan £100 to design a more professional version. This was launched on 22 February 2003, which I count as the moment this site was born."
And 9 years later, the site is valued at £87million - based on an annual revenue of £15.8m and annual profit of £12.6m.

But I'm sure that for every success story like this, there are hundreds or perhaps thousands of failures.

My ex runs a website that makes 60k profit a year, solely through advertising, but he's running it and developing for it all day, every day.
Whilst 60k is much better than I ever did with any of my hobby websites I would argue that it isnt in the league of Facebook, eBay, Twitter etc which the OP claimed they want to be able to replicate the fame of. How many people in Venezuela would know your ex's site? Certainly the vast majority would know the sites the OP listed.
MSE might gets as much as £10 for a car insurance policy sold trhough one of its affiliate links
Erm.... try up to 90 quid which Aviva are currently giving for Motor or 85 for More Th<n
