Need help buying a desktop.

I have saved up to buy a desktop for my children to share as their main Christmas present.

I have had a look around (though I am not really sure where to look tbh) and the best deal I can find is this one:

http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/5074392.htm

It will mostly be used for the internet & homework - I'm not sure whether there will be any gaming on it. Not too much I hope!

Does this see like a good deal? Is there anything I should be aware of when buying a desk top? Will it do everything I need? Is there anywhere else I should look?

I would quite happily buy 2nd hand but OH want a warranty with it and so is reluctant, same with refurbished computers.

All opinions appreciated :)

It seems like a pretty good deal to me, certainly adequate for internet and homework.

Do remember that the package comes with an 18.5'' monitor. Monitors are fairly expensive pieces of kit, so if you already have a decent flatscreen monitor you would be better off buying a slightly better/cheaper computer and using your existing monitor.

If you just want to buy the computer itself then have a look at Dell's website, www.dell.co.uk, as they have very customisable packages.

Not at all any good for gaming. You can do slightly better than that yourself with a bit of shifty shuffling.

For example; this PC for £149.99. Windows 8 for £24.99(will assist with the download and installation)

Then you can get a decent 23" or 24" monitor for less than £130. Such as this LG IPS234V 23inch IPS LED HD Widescreen TFT Monitor with HDMI, DVI & VGA for £120

The monitor in the Argos package is not even Full HD.

I don't think you can get Windows 8 for £25. That is a upgrade version, which means you need to have windows 7/vista/xp product key,

However, OP can still buy PC + OEM Windows + monitor seperately, such that he/ she can get better quality monitor.

I know it is an Upgrade version. You can still install it. Lets not make a drama about it. ;)
The real question is whether they would want Windows 8 in the first place. Anyway, its a simple matter.
