Camcorder help

I am wondering if anyone could advise me about camcorders. I am trying to buy one for my DD but haven't got a clue about them! She is only 6, but has had a camera for a few years and uses the video on that but ideally would like something that records better pictures. I really have no idea where to start and was looking at something like THIS but it says its HD, we do not have anything HD in the house so will recording in SD make picture quality worse? Also the one in the link is that type of shape she seems more interested in rather than the pistol grip (I think thats what they are called) but there doesn't seem to be many around. Obviously I do not want to spend a lot of money but she takes some brilliant pictures with her camera and has never damaged it, she understands how it works so I don't want to buy anything so cheap that it is rubbish and puts her off. So any ideas anyone? Thanks
