Been a while since I tried AVG but when I did about 18 months ago it ran really slowly.

Is this still the case or should I try it again and get rid of this McAffee thing that's taken control of my machine?

I use free AVG and it works really well for me

AVG runs fine. just set it to do a full scan after you have installed. It seems to stay quiet (in terms of computing overhead) after that

I moved from McAfee Enterprise to AVG and found it to run much smoother and it even found a real virus that was on my system that McAfee had missed altogether.
