How do I move my stuff from my old pc to my new pc?

I will be purchasing a new desktop pc within the next 6 weeks and I want to be prepared.
I have a folder on my desktop with about 50 MS office 2003 lesson plans and 20 pdf(s) documents in it, photos - less than 100 - in Adobe photoshop and 4 videos in Nero 8 that will need to be moved across. I've been reading all the stickies but, proving how thick I am, I don't understand them - and I've never backed up anything in my life.
I do not have any installation disks for MS Office, Adobe or Nero. (I do have an installation disk for Windows XP:rotfl:but I'm sure I wont be needing that)!
Could someone talk me through what I'll need to do PLEASE?:j
Oh, I think my hubby will need to move a very large Excel file across as well.

Whack the documents on a usb stick ?
Or (more complicated)
Use your old (current) hard drive as data drive in your new pc and switch it from master to slave?

I'd like to know how to back things up, too. I've never backed anything up on my pc either - although in my household we only tend to use it to surf. These USB sticks, what do you do? Just push it in one of the ports? Does it then just do it?0 -

Go to Asda and buy a 4gb memory stick for £5.(Verbatim blue or pink).
Put it in the usb port on your old pc, then find what you want to transfer from your old pc.
Supposed you have a folder with photos in it, you just right click and then "send to" the memory stick.
Then put the stick into your new pc and right click "send to documents".
Basically that`s it.0 -

Windows easy transfer is the way to go.

You can use it with a USB stick, HDD or over your network, be warned though as the latter is very slow. That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -

You should be able to "import" them to your new laptop via your email account.
If stored in a folder in my documents etc, just right click and send to the memory stick.0 -

Agree with penrhyn. Use WET via an external hard drive. It will copy all your data, including emails from Outlook Express or Windows Mail. Then just install Windows Live Mail or Thunderbird on your new PC and import the archive when you set it up.
Programs cannot be copied, the must be reinstalled. so you'll need to beg/borow copies of the disks for Photoshop and Nero, and then reinstall using your existing licence keys. Similarly MS Office, though your new PC may come with Windows Starter edn preinstalled (basically Word and Excel).
If not, use Libre Office instead.
WET is much better than it used to be, I've done 3 transfers recently XP to W7 without any issues at all.No free lunch, and no free laptop
