Disappeared plumber

Options
A week ago our boiler started playing up and after ringing around a few plumbers we found someone who was willing to have a look at it. He came late in the afternoon last Tuesday, was there for about 5 mins and then left saying he would be back on Wednesday. He came back on Wednesday stayed for about 2 mins, turned the radiators and taps to maximum then said he would need a part and then left again. On Wednesday night the boiler got very upset and kept emergency shutting down (including an emergency pressure release) when we try to use it - oh and the pressure caused the radiator in the hall to break and leak water everywhere! So he comes back on Thursday stays around 30 mins and changes a part in the boiler. We show him the leaking radiator he says he will need a part and will be back on Friday. Thursday night the boiler is still emergency shutting down constantly so we call him to say the boiler is still very much broken and no improvement so he says he will need another part and will come on Saturday. Stayed in all of Saturday but he never showed up. He is not answering his phone and it is Tuesday now! A week without a working boiler and it has been freezing!

The thing is we have not paid the guy anything yet and he is still not responding to our calls. His website states 'no call out charges' and 'no fix no fee' and technically even though he has done some work and replaced a part he has definitely not left us with a working boiler!

I am wondering how long to leave it before giving up on him and trying another plumber? It is too cold to just leave it not working! Any advice - I hate dealing with tradesmen, I find it so hard to trust them!

  • In this weather call someone else. I would not pay him as well.
  • Would leave it until about 11:30 today..:) from his actions he appears to not know what he is doing or care.

To find a good plumber go to checkatrade or see if you can get a recommended one from a neighbour or friend, as the bolier is playing up you need a Gas Safe registered engineer.
every time I manage to get one more breath into this body, I will sing a song of thanks to you my brothers, my sisters, my friends, may your sleep be peaceful, and angels sing sweetly in your ears.

Did you check that this 'plumber' is a GSR RGI? A 'plumber' is not qualified to work on gas boilers. Did you ask to see his GSR reg?
Did you ask him how much these miscellaneous parts would cost you?
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
