Carers Allowance eligibility question.

Hello, all.

I'm thinking of temporarily moving in to my nan's due to long term issues at home with my 'mom' and the house's living conditions. She is the carer for my nan.

My question is: would me moving in with my nan affect her Carers Allowance claim? I can't find any relavent answers on any of the official sites, but also nothing to imply that it would cause a problem (given that I won't be acting in a carer capacity and my presence there won't affect my nan's benefit claim (as far as I can tell) - I think it's disability).

Does anybody have an answer or any relavent experience with an issue like this?

Many thanks.

No, if she's doing the caring, she's entitled to the allowance.

It doesn't matter who else lives in the house.

Depending on your age and how long you end up staying with Nan, you may need to check out the Council Tax.

What do you mean by 'check out the Council Tax'?

Also: would my moving in disrupt any claims that my nan may have? I.e. disability, etc.

    What benefits does she get?

I asume she's of pensionable age - so she just gets DLA/AA plus pension?

Housing benefit could be an issue too, you need to find out for sure what benefits she gets. "Disability" could cover a number of benefits and also be dependant on her age.

You would be moving in as a non dependent. So would have to look at the rules for non dependents. So as roger said, it really depends what benefits she's getting.

If someone is claiming carers allowance that means she should either be getting DLA or AA.

The council tax benefit/housing benefit would show no change if she gets a care component according to the DWP website. However, I'm unsure about things like pension credit (if she receives it)

Your gran will have been getting a 25% discount for living alone. with you moving in she will lose that. I guess you'll just have to make up the difference

But if she's also on an income related benefit, then she wouldn't have any council tax to pay. So not sure how that one works out with the non dependent rules.
