GNER 10pd return-leeds-london

Official MoneySavingExpert.com insert:

What's the deal?

Over the last couple of weeks, GNER have been offering single train tickets on their London-Leeds route for £5 each.

How/when can I get the tickets?

To get the discount tickets, you have to buy directly from the GNER website. Of course, it's not possible to narrow your search down to the cheapest tickets only (this'd be easy peasy), so you'll have to click on 'see single fares' after entering the date you want to travel, and hope that it comes up with some discount tickets to choose from.

The £5 fares are most widely available on weekdays at off-peak times. You'll undoubtedly need to be flexible if you're to put together a round-trip. There is a useful form on their site which you can enter your travels details and email address into, then you'll get an email when tickets for your dates become available.

GNER's second 12,000 tickets are currently being released. The booking and travel dates are as follows:

Book now for travel between 21 May and 13 July 2007.
Book from 26 April for travel between 21 May and 20 July 2007.

Anything else I should know?

No refunds or changes will be allowed after booking. Children under 5 can travel free if they don't occupy a seat.

You can also buy a connecting ticket to/from most stations in West Yorkshire for a £2 (e/w) supplement via the GNER website.

P.S. This entry has been inserted so I can put an official, fully researched MoneySavingExpert.com explanation at the top. Thank you to Rumman for the top spot.

Doncaster is included in the price, the extra cost would be sheffield to doncaster other.
  • Not sure if this is new, but there's a link showing the availablility of tickets throughout the day, from "best" to "few".

So picking a date at random, why can I see £5 tickets available Leeds to London on the 8.40, 9.40, 10.40, 11.05, 11.40, 12.05, etc

  • Just to explain, I'm "Mr Unity" - the computer defaulted to Her Indoors's identity when I posted here (silly me) and the missus then got all uppity about me taking her name in vain and deleted the first Unity post. (Women...!)

Okay then Altarf, maybe you can help me with this - I'm assuming you're not GNER's marketing director or something. Or if anybody can explain this, for that matter, I'd be very grateful...

I was wanting to travel to London anytime during the week in May. So I go to the GNER website, I put in from Leeds to London, single, after 8.00am, on Wednesday 23 May.

As I posted earlier (as Unity) the cheapest possible tickets that come up are the MML Advance C at £7.00 - although none of these are actually available. The cheapest tickets you can actually buy is the GNER STD Advance 1 at £11.15. Using the "find later trains" arrow at the bottom of GNER's boooking display I laboriously page through the entire day to last train at 21.48. No £5.00 tickets to be seen, anywhere.

I do exactly the same for Thursday 24 May, Friday 25 May, Monday 28 May, Tuesday 29 May, Wednesday 30 May and finally Thursday 31 May. I get exactly the same result. The cheapest tariff shown is the MML Advance C at £7.00 although this is never available - except I believe once, for the 21.48 last train on Friday 25 (which I think doesn't get you into London until after 7 in the morning!) The cheapest tickets you can actually book are the Std Advance 1 at £11.15 although on Monday 28 I don't think even these were available.

The tariffs that are shown (in the left hand column of the GNER booking display) are Std Advance: 1 (£11.15), 2 (£15.60), 3 (£21.80), and 4 (£31.50); 1st Advance: 1 (£30.70), 2 (£42.70), 3 (£56.05) and 4 (£78.00); Saver Single (£73.70); Standard Open Single (£87.50); First Open Single Single (£136.50).

So like I said, maybe I'm very stupid but as far as I can see these tickets DO NOT EXIST.

I go to GNER's own website. I try to book tickets from Leeds to London. I try every train, from 8.05 to 21.48, every weekday from Wednesday 23 to Thursday 31. NO £5 tickets show on my computer. Not one.

What could I possibly be doing wrong? Do GNER have something against just me or my particular computer, for some reason?

(I've seen the link giving availability of these promotional tickets, from best to few, BTW - but since I can't find any, at anytime, this isn't really much of a help...)
  • Hi

I think the problem you could be having is that if you put a time in the results shown are just those trains which are immediately after that time. I had the same problem.

However, having tested the link now it no longer seems to be working so I am no longer sure whether the offer is running...
