Charged for wrong meter

I came home today to find a note pushed through my door saying I owe npower £860-ish and they would come in and cut me off if I didn't phone them. I was slightly surprised, as I'd used energyhelpline.com via this site to change to British Gas for my electricity.
I phoned npower PDQ, and after a bit of to-ing and fro-ing and a fair amount of time on hold, they asked me to check my meter serial number. When I read it out, they said "Yes, that's the one. Better check with British Gas what serial number they have". So I phoned BG, and found that they have a different serial number for me. I phoned my previous supplier, and they had the same wrong number, too. That means that I have been paying somebody else's electricity for 3 years
Now I've been billed off the meter readings I've given, so the amounts are probably fairly correct, even if they are for the wrong meter. My question is: where do I stand with all of this? Should I be reclaiming from previous suppliers, and then repaying for the correct meter? Who is actually my supplier - the one I asked for or the one who "owns" the meter? I'm also wondering whose meter is actually attached to my account.
Any thoughts?
