Insinkerator/waste disposal unit

Does anyone have one of these, and if so what are your thoughts please?
We're in the process of having a new kitchen installed, and I thought it would be a great idea to put one in as we are a family of 5, so generate a lot of rubbish every week, so anything which can cut down some of the bulk and eliminate the smelly stuff sounded great.
The builders said as they left this evening that it was all installed and checked and ready for use, so I gleefully used it preparing tea tonight, only for it to give up the ghost after munching one tea bag and the skin from 3 carrots! I did run it with the cold tap running as per instructions.
The builders are back tomorrow so I can get them to fix it, but does anyone have any ideas what I might have done wrong, or are they just intrinsically a bit of a carp idea

I had one in my last house and never put tea bags down it, you also have to run lots of water while macerating, not a trickle but full on
Tbh, it wasted so much space under the sink that I had a plumber remove it0 -
I have had one for a long time (Insinkerator, then Tweeny) and do expect it to munch the odd teabag (I usually make tea in a pot so don't use teabags often). It can't cope with large amounts of fibrous stuff, and does struggle with lemon halves or large pieces of orange peel.
1 teabag & skins from 3 carrots should be standard fare.0 -
It's probably sorted by now but there should be a reset button on the unit. Get the builders to show you where it is.

Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere (please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. If you have any questions about this policy please email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com.A little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men
