Don't have much details as it's not my computer.
A friend has an Asus laptop with Win 7 Ultimate (up to date) which until a few days ago was happy playing DVD's through medial player.
Now the icon says it's a CD drive and will not play DVD's
I ran this http://support.microsoft.com/mats/cd_dvd_drive_problems
& it seemed to repair it, but nothings changed.
It will open the disk & display it's contents & it will play CD's
Does it need replacing? or is their something that needs fixing

Might not work but try uninstalling the drive in 'device manager' then right click and 'scan for hardware changes' to let it reinstall?0

computer-(right click)cd drive, properties, hardware, check the model number of dvddrive in the list (in the TYPE field should show as dvd/cd drive),highlight that dvdrw drive in the field then go down to properties tab at bottom go to hardware, and then check the region of the dvdrom drive, if the region is set wrongly adjust to region 2, you can also see the driver versions, click update or rollback driver if it worked ok on the last driver if it was inadvertantly updated.0

It was set to region 2,I checked. I'll try and get her to uninstall tomorrow (though she probably wont be able as she'd be 2 scared to do anything like that)0
