Despite running NAV, Zone Alarm, Spybot and Adaware SE it seems that a nasty has got into my PC. It causes Explorer to freeze when clicking on some but not all links, research led me to 'manage Addons' in explorer tools. There was an addon called req.dat enabled, disabling it fixed the problem but how do I get rid of it (easily?)
Symantec etc don't seem to have any reference to it so I'm still at a loss as to what the thing is capable of doing apart from being annoying.
Any assistance gratefully received.

Seeing as you've tried adaware and spybot, and they've not picked this up. Try hijackthis. This scans specifically for browser addons. Find it HERE
It's not a good idea to install AVG free. This is an antivirus program. You've already got a perfectly good AV (Norton). It's really not a good idea to have more than one AV on your system. How many surrealists does it take to change a lightbulb?

Description of a fix for req.dat "]here.
Or try a full system scan with Ewido

Unless you require access to sites that use active-x components I would suggest discontinuing the use of IE where possible. Use Firefox instead.
IE is a window into your system and consequently the weakest point of your computer.
With a couple of clicks you can rearrange the layout of Firefox to look like IE.
Give it a try, see what you think - I doubt you'll go back to IE after0 -
Many thanks for the suggestions, I have run Ewido and was amazed that it found 17 tracking cookies and one trojan, sadly not req.dat. Send off the req file to ewido for there comments.
TOG: Tried the other link for the req.dat fix but ended up in Google?!

Thanks to all for the help, I think that I've finally got rid of req.dat from the machine. I used Ewido which identified it but would not remove it. Hijackthis was the same even in safe mode. I finally downloaded Pocket killbox which DID delete the file on reboot. I'm going to reset system restore as soon as I've given it a final scan!
