Scottish Power - Problem with bill - where do I stand?
Options
Hello all,
I had a letter in Feb stating that I was 32.81 in credit after paying my bill for 19/11/06 to 19/02/07
I have now had another letter saying:
"It has come to our attention that your Scottish Power gas account has been billed incorrectly since 19/08/06 (when I moved in).
The error occurred due to incorrect meter details being loaded onto our system after the meter at your property was changed on 05/10/04 (eh?).
I have re-billed your account fdrom 19/08/06 to 18/04/07 and the new balanced OWED is 58.21
It goes on but nothing of interest...
Can they make such an error - admit it was THEIR fault then charge ME for THEIR mistake?
Last I knew I was 32.81 in credit and now, 3 months later, I Owe them money after my DD of 22 quid per month is payed!
"We are happy to increase your DD amount to pay this over 12 months - a charge will be incurred for this..."
Where do I stand legally? It is rented acoomadation...
Thanks.

Addditional information:
THEY made the mistake and had me on the wrong meter rate so are charging ME for their mistake.
I signed up to a rate and now they want to backdate more!
If I agree with a customer £10 per month for a service, then go to them 8 months later and say "Actually, my mistake - materials cost me more - you owe me another £5 per month NOT from now but from when you made the agreement..." I think I know what would happen...Being bored is so boring Im bored of it... :rotfl:0 -
A more accurate comparison would be "Actually, you took more materials than we realised, so we are charging for the extra materials you took".
You haven't been charged for all the power you've used, and utility companies are allowed to back bill up to two years. Also this mistake has been noticed fairly quickly (within a few months) and they have allowed you to spread the payments, so you don't have much grounds for complaint I'm afraid.0 -
The reading they had was correct... I wasnt using more - they were charging me x pence per unit and now want to charge y pence per unit...
Never mind - I eventually got through to someone who explained PROPERLY what happened. They thought I was on metric but wasnt (or other way around). Have given me a goodwill gesture towards that value. Not the best situation but got through it (thanks to energy watch...)Being bored is so boring Im bored of it... :rotfl:0
