Cleartype in IE7 (and Firefox)

What exactly is cleartype?
I assumed it was a fancy IE7 thing, but I've just realised it can be set in XP.
(Properties, settings, appearance, effects, "use the following method to smooth edges of screen fonts" and choose cleartype)
Can you install it without IE7?

yes you don't need ie7, just a TFT monitor and XP or vista.Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
