Moving direct debits from current acc to credit card

As I've just got a cashback CC I'd like to transfer all my DD's to it. Is there an easy way to do it or do I have to start them again?

You can not set up a Direct Debit from a Credit Card. You may be thinking of a Continuous Payment Authority which is a completely different animal.

    You don't. The retailer does.

I doubt that most companies will set one up for things like gas, eletric, council tax & water rates.
You would just have to make a payment via your card as and when needed.

  • Some will so a CPA from credit cards rather than a DD but they may not give the discount that they offer to DD and/ or may charge a transaction fee for doing it (our last council added 1.8% fee).

With some by switching back to manual payments you may be able to find alternative ways of paying using the card fee free (eg possibly at a post office - but i dont know). Unfortunately there is less opportunity than there seems in the USA, there you can even pay your income tax etc by credit card and there are forums to discuss which routes you can use for each state to do so fee free.

It's very unlikely to be worthwhile doing this as you get hit with a CC transaction fee (maybe 1-2%) and lose the DD discount (could be 5%+).

There are some exceptions. I paid my council tax for about 4 years with no fee on a cashback CC but they have now introuduced a 2% charge so it's game over

Just wondered as I pay my broadband every month automatically by credit card. As I've now got a cashback card I want to make the best use of it.

If you already pay by CC, then just ring them up and change the card details?

I changed my broadband to a CC as they stated there is no charge for paying with a CC, and I get 3% cashback for using it, so seems like a no brainer.

The Post Office don't take credit cards at all - except for postage and other PO products

Thanks for clearing it up, as I said, I wasnt sure.... if you look at US forms for cashback or reward cards they forever talk about 3rd party routes (like the PO) for paying bills etc that are fee free with CCs.

Dont know if any exist for the UK as monthly bills I pay by DD and the annual bills like HMRC apply charges beyond the cashback/ reward value but I've never been dilligent enough to hunt around to see if there are other options.

Be careful you don't start losing out on valuable direct debit discounts in your strive to get a bit of cashback. ;)
