If you think UK insurance is bad!

We want to change our French insurance so wrote to the company 6 weeks before the policy ends to cancel, got a letter back saying they would not cancel. So I rang and they said the letter was too late to cancel but I could write and cancel once they had sent out the renewal letter! They would not accept that letter for this!
So a letter can be too late and too early to cancel my insurance!
