Redundant - voluntary

Hi

My hubby is, we think, about to be made redundant. Employers have asked for volunteers for redundancy and he is in the process of asking them to make him an offer and shall decide whether he takes that, or if not much different shall wait and be made redundant.

My question is, does it make any difference to any benefits we may receive whether he has made himself voluntary redundant, or is he better to be made compulsory redundant?

I work part time 18.5 hours per week, my salary is £11250 (gross) and we have 1 child who we pay private nursery fees for. We have £8000 in savings, and depending on any payout, that will increase by at least another £4000.

Also, any ideas what benefits we would be entitled to? Having always worked we have never claimed benefits before, its a minefield!

Thanks xx
