Home Insurance with an Autistic child

Options
Hi,

Has anyone ever heard of an insurance company that offers a policy for families with an autistic family member?

I have searched the internet and can't find anything!

Our teenage son is profoundly autistic and does sometimes damage expensive items in the home. We understand that the cost would be much higher than "normal" but we feel that this would be a price worth paying to avoid the difficult questions surrounding a claim!

If anyone can point me in the right direction for a suitable policy or even a top-notch normal policy, I'd be grateful!

Rachel

I'm not aware of any that ask.

Are we talking about accidental damage or deliberate?

    Deliberate is generally not insurable.

Accidental is insurable but a series of claims may make it difficult to get any cover at all.

Have you tried the autistic society?

as RS65 says, although I'm not sure if a profoundly autistic child can be argued to be capable of forming the intention necessary for "deliberate" damage.

But, that little diversion aside, as above your problem is likely to be getting continuing cover following multiple claims, might be one you end up self insuring
  • Thanks guys. I did try the Autistic Society and they do a policy for Personal Liability which I will apply for but nothing for home contents. As you say, usually the damage is "deliberate" in that it might happen in the middle of an outburst.

Think we will just have to insure the home for the "normal" issues and hope that we don't suffer too many incidences that would be morally wrong to claim for!

You would be wasting your money buying that as a Home Insurance would normally include Personal Liability as standard.

If you took out the separate cover and had Home Insurance which included Personal Liability, the Autism Soc Policy would not pay out anyway due to...

    "Excludes any personal liability
otherwise insured (you may be covered
    under your household contents
    insurance"
