hello all. I just wondered if anyone has any good advice. I have a 3yr old little boy who has Nystagmus(eye condition) and has just been diagnosed with ASD (autistic spectrum disorder) A friend of mine has suggested that I should apply for DLA for my little boy. Is this right? I live with my husband and we have an income of around 30-32k pre annum, and am not on any benifits, can I still apply and does anyone have any experience of claiming for an autistic child? I have heard that DLA can be quite hard to get. Any advice appreaciated, many thanks.

Yes you can apply for DLA as it does not depend on your Income. Also it is not awarded on the diagnosis but the care and mobility needs of the person concerned. I have read of numerous people with autistic children who have been awarded it. It is best to get help with completing the form from a Welfare Rights Officer, they can be found at the CAB, Local Council and at Disability Organisations.0

I have known people to get DLA for this, but the ones with the greatest success were those who took some advice from the Autism support groups:
The National Autistic Society

Contact a family

If you want to do informal on-line self assessment, then try this:

The CAB will give advice:

You can tell a lot about a woman by her hands..........for instance, if they are placed around your throat, she's probably slightly upset.

I have an autistic child and have been receiving DLA since she was 3. The nas have a very good fact sheet you can download about how to claim also try this ,link as this information is really good https://www.bhas.org.uk as it tells you how to fill in the form. The form (booklet!)for DLA is very off putting but you must claim, even if you get refused the first time appeal, we have twice had to appeal but when it went to tribunal we won and our daughter recieved DLA at the higher rate. It is how you fill the form in so get some advice. DLA is not related to income0
