Installing a Log Fire/Log Burner- help please!

Good morning,
We have recently moved into a house built around 1970, which is terraced between two other houses and has a central chimney rising through pretty much through the exact centre of the house.
I would like to put in a log burner, or reinstate the old fireplace which we uncovered during recent wallpapering.
We have Gas Fired CH and a big old Potterton boiler does the honours, which must be at least 20 odd years old. This is situated on the ground floor. The waste gases go up the chimney.
I have been told that I can’t have an open fire whilst this occurs- is this true for a wood burner also?
Please forgive my ignorance on this if this is a stupid question.
The issue is that we only have two external walls, and an L shaped Living Room on the first floor with large French doors at either end, so realistically only one place for the burner and flue to exit. This is also where the Sky/Aerials come into the house and where the TV sits, so not ideal!
Are there any other solutions? I don’t want an electric, gas or liquid fuel fire, interested only in fires that can burn logs/coal.
Long term we will need to replace the boiler, so when this occurs we were going to go with a combi on an outside wall downstairs, and then use the old fireplace unless there is a better solution?
Many thanks in advance for your responses.

I would suggest you contact a professional installer. If you live in London i can recommend someone who installed my wood burner.
I have never regretted having a wood burner installed!0 -
If you want to install a woodburner you will need a Hetas accredited installer to inspect your flue to make sure it is compliant with their regulations. You could then install a woodburner boiler stove which could heat both your central Heating and Hot water to the cylinder cupboard I presume you have on the first floor. But make sure you have a reliable source of well seasoned timber as they do burn a lot !. Alternatively you could install your woodburner and then install a condensing combi boiler in the location where your cylinder tank was as it will not be needed with a combi and run its own flue through the ceiling and through the roof. Installation should be done by a Gas Safe accredited installer.0
