Natwest: Closing account

Hi everyone.

Currently serving in Afghanistan. Iv paid off my Natwest overdraft and I want to close the account. It's been dormant for a long time as I bank with someone else. It's incredibly frustrating as they have absolutely no online contact facilities!! I can't phone. Iv had to use the "Making a Complaint" form TWICE! With no response at all. I do t have online banking either. Feel a bit held to ransom. It's a growing trend with companies I feel. Just because they can't be bothered. Helpful banking, my !!!!

So my question is, does anybody have a direct customer services email that works please? OR, the lowdown on whether I can have my parents go into the branch on my behalf? Given how analyst security is now, I doubt the latter is possible.

Cheers for taking the time to read.

Kind regards.

An account closure would not accepted by email anyway.

The best way forward would be to put it writing. You could send the letter to your patents and ask them to take it into a branch for you.

If the account is not being used I can't see what harm is being done by it being left open.

    Plenty of contact options here

No bank will take instructions via email. As you could be anyone.
Your parents could go in. But unless they are just passing a letter you have written. Then NatWest will do nothing.

Just leave it till you come back to the UK and sort it in person then.

If you have proof you have sent a complaint. Then they will have to act on this. Might take them 8 weeks to respond. But if they don't within that time. You can then go to FOS. If they have failed to log the complaint.... Ouch, that will really hurt them, as its the biggest NoNo a bank can do.

Am I right in thinking the OP is making a compliant as the bank do not offer the facility to contact them via email.

Well if that is the complaint. It'a never going to win. emails are insecure and could be sent by anyone. I guess that Natwest will be responding to thier known contact details.

But I do not get the "I can't phone" as our troops out there can phone from some bases.

  • Dalesrider..."Rodger" but when I am actually at a FOB I'm hardly going to use the 30mins per WEEK I get being stuck on hold to a bank. Even if they wouldn't accept my request over email, there should be a point on contact via these means. It's just common courtesy.

Anyway, cheers for the advice guys. Looks like snail mail will have to win the day. As far as I'm aware, I've read on this website a couple of times that having excess bank accounts that are not used actually has a negative impact on your credit. That was the info I was working off on this. An unused £400 overdraft is credit I like to have available on other products.

    Thanks again.

If a customer sends us a email. They get a standard responce to login to internet banking and send a secure message.
But as you said you don't have that set up.
As to the excess bank accounts and credit. Don't think £400 will make much diffrence.

You don't say how many other accounts you have. But I would always advise to have at least 2 that are not related. Simply from the point of view. If you ever lose a card or get hit by fraud. you have a back up.
So just ask to remove the O/D on the account.

Providing you have you debit card and a card reader you can register for online banking and get immediate access in most cases:

    https://www.nwolb.com/default.aspx?refererident=3808887083FAA43CE5D387E02209D8580AD98F4E&cookieid=115872&noscr=false&InnerPage=OLE&CookieCheck=2012-12-03T22:08:06

Once your signed in you can then amend your overdraft online to "nil" if thats what you require.
