We don't know what he needs and/or wants to do unless you tell us.

I really can't believe that every amateur DJ in the land will want to do exactly the same as all the others, that there's one set of requirements for them all.....

Most cheap DJ controllers will do the same these days, be twin deck, with fade in . out, scratch sound, pitch bend, jog wheel for play and cue, and so on.

Numark do a few cheap and cheerful options.

DJ2GO is one, designed for portability and hooks upto laptop (can use tower pc as well). About £40. They also same model for ipad and iphone control. About £60

Ion do the iDJ 2 go which is almost identical to the numark dj2go for about £60.

Then you can get Hercules DJ, which looks better and had a lot more options for about £80.

There is another alternative, set of headphones, usb sound card and software for about £20 but is very basic and all controls are done via a computer
Mansion TV. Avoid at all cost's :j

ive just bought a numark mixtrack pro £159 with built in souncard, this comes with software and will do everything you require its not of the same standard as your cd1000s(cd decks) but as a starter it is very good .

    Probably best to ask him?

Is he doing hour+ long mixes like you'd find at a rave or is he doing radio-style DJing? Is he streaming them online? Is he making mashups? Does he currently have any software or does the deck he buy need to come with some?
