You will probably be using the red and white phono plug connections to link them together.

I used to have a similar setup but just linked by dvd player to the hifi as the tv sound on its own was quite good. The dvd to hifi link gave film sound a great boost.

Which magazine has just done a review of soundbars and quite a few had poor ratings.

You need to do more research the Denon RCD-M38DAB is a Hi-fi system and can't correct to the TV (no HDMI port), and a sound bar only has 1 or 2 HDMI inputs which is not enought for todays media systems.
Do you want your money back, and a bit more, search for 'money claim online' - They don't like it up 'em Captain Mainwaring

You don't need HDMI to connect to the Denon - The line/RCA output or the audio from a Scart out, if the set has one will do the job well.

Similarly, many soundbars have a variety of inputs (esp 3rd party), so there should be few connection problems there either.

If so I will look for a cheapish long cable just to try it out, the technics system is the other side of the room and do not want to dismantle and move it all at the moment.

You don't need to spend a great deal on cables for this - Amazon and ebay both have quite suitable non-branded cables for just a few pounds that will do the job fine. :)

Here is the back of the Denon:

You need a line/RCA cable to connect to the "Analog In" pair of sockets.

here is one - 5 metres, around a fiver:

You can go cheaper or dearer if you want.

IIRC the "Digital In" socket on the unit is a Denon specific thing and they will see you coming for cable prices - Fo that reason, I'd avoid using it!

The input is Toslink which is apparently a common optical digital connector. Leads are sensible prices.

I have a Denon RCD-M38DAB hooked up to Monitor Audio speakers.

It is a good hifi for it's size. It has a separate AUX in which I have hooked up to my TV using phono cables. I would think the 39 version would be the same, check, I would be surprised if they have changed the chasis.

I must admit I found it too deep/rich in tone and stopped using it, plus it was another 80w consumption that I personally didn't need.

Soundbar or surround system would give you better layering I would have thought.

I got mine from HiFix in Coventry mail order.

So we've established that the Denon has a digital optical in. You need to find out if your TV has a digital optical out, then buy a cable the right length.
OR stick with the Technics (if it's decent, it's probably got BETTER sound than the Denon, especially if the speakers are bigger) and find out if it's got a stereo phono INPUT free, and if the TV has a stereo phono OUTPUT.
    zaax's post is rubbish BTW.

Thanks almillar , I know what to look for now. Yes I thought that zaax was mistaken as having done research re the denon prior to this we knew it was possible. Just wanted to know if it would be better than a sound bar. However as a result of everybodies posts on here we shall investigate using the technics so may well save our money and less hassle! And if not it will be the Denon. As always thanks to all for taking the time to respond to my post.
