Yes of course as long as her mum has a computer, that's what I was meaning, I didn't make myself very clear in my original post. I am saying this as one of my elderly ladies that I work for bought one for herself not realising she had to have a computer or wifi/3G etc to buy the books. Bless0 -
candjsmum - bless indeed! I appreciate your comment! SHe does have wifi but rarely uses it! If we bought the kindle we'd load it with a few books to start with and then it would be down to us or the grandchildren to sort her out after that!!0

That's a great idea. :j I have just read the Breckton trilogy by Mary Wood, very Catherine Cookson, and a breeze at roughly £1.90 a book. It is a fantastic thing and would make a fab present. Good luck with whatever you deicide.0 -
you dont need wifi, can just plug the white lead from the pc to the kindle and then I recommend you install calibre - an ebook manager to upload stuff. You can get free books from eg Project Gutenberg which has an awful lot of out of copyright stuff - I think basically anything where the author has been deceased 50 years or so? For example George Bernard Shaw died 1950 and a lot of his stuff is on Gutenberg, weirdly indexed as Bernard Shaw. Jane Austen, the brontes etc are commonly available and once downloaded to pc, you add them in to calibre and then with kindle connected by cable you can "add to device" in calibre. Simples!0

I have a couple of newspaper and magazine subscriptions- it's a little costly, but it might be a nice option to buy her a subscription before you give it. That way she always has new content (I think you can also get 'Sunday paper' only subscriptions, but I'm not sure.)0

I use ereaderiq.co.uk. They send you an email everyday with a list of new free titles. No cost to sign up and no monthly fee. They do have books you can buy but you could get by easily on all the free ones0

just another thought! We're going for the 'basic one which everyone seems to be selling for £69. If i get it at argos there's a £5 voucher. Is there any benefit to getting it from amazon/disadvantage fromm getting it elsewhere? actually john lewis prob best bet for 2 year warranty? but again is it best to get from amazon? Thanks again0

Just a word of warning. You say that your Mum's hands hurt holding a book - does she suffer from arthritis?
I have one of the older Kindles where you press a button at either side of the device to change pages. This could be difficult for someone with stiff hands. If she has any mobility problems with her hands/fingers, you should be looking at the touch Kindles where you move pages by touching the screen.
I would agree with what has been said already. I get the daily newsletter e-mail mentioned above and never have to buy a book there is always plenty of free choice. At the moment I've got 30 downloaded waiting to read.
E-mail will require her to have computer access!!0 -
Be Happy - I'm saying a big thank you to you - albeit through gritted teeth!! I've found a few reviews where arthritis sufferers (& yes my mum is one of them!) have given negative comments for the reasons you suggest! Research is ongoing!!0
