think we've decicded to get my mum a kindle. she needs large print and is near to exhausting the supply in the local library, also her hands can hurt holding a hardback so it seems like a no brainer? Have looked at the other e readers but keep coming back to kindle. the one thing still to suss before i buy is that she never buys books always the library! I see for £50 per year we can join amazon prime and that gives membership of kindle library but what are the titles like? is there a good selection. she likes fairly 'mainstream' stuff james patterson & other thriller/detective stuff and maybe a bit of 'romance'. will there be plenty for her to choose from? Thanks folks (& sorry if this isnt the right section for this question!!)

The Kindle library is very, very limited - mostly the sort of stuff that they do for 99p bargains. Lots of crime and romance but not really known names. And, I think, you are quite limited in the number of books you can have. However, if you get a kindle there are loads of free emails and apps you can sign up to which will let you know what the free daily deals are and cheapies so she can might want to start off that way and then seen if she needs a Prime subscription0

Do you have to pay a subscription for free titles? Is it basically the cost of the Kindle and that's it?0

There are hundreds of title for free on Amazon, ok mostly older classics but that's a start. Kindle lending Library will improve over here....look at the USA model, we will eventually get that. As long as the kindles are linked to the same Amazon account you can share books between them and finally, there are many books out there for under £1 some good some not so good. Get someone to buy her an Amazon gift voucher to go with the Kindle. I rarley spend more than £2 on a kindle book and have uncovered from great reads. Oh and one last thing....some libraries do have an e-reading library, check your local one for services.0

There are millions of free books on Amazon for a kindle. I have had one for a year and a half and never paid for a book yet

is the best place for free ones. Just click on the genre for the ones you want or wade through 12 pages a day of free books. :j0 -
thats all really useful thanks folks. was also chatting to some people at work today as well and i think we'll just get her an amazon gift voucher for the moment. If there are plenty of cheap books, that will prob be cheaper than £50 amazon prime, shes not that fast a reader!0

funnily enough I used the library for the first time today - but as other posters have said you don't need the library fo free stuff - especially if you are interested in more classical books.
Love the ability to scale the font up to pretty much any size you wantI think I saw you in an ice cream parlour

If you read the Kindle Lending Library terms, you eventually find that you're restricted to one book per monthMurphy's No More Pies Club #209

Just a thought that if you do decide to get her one is she able to download books to it ie does she have wifi in her house. If not you would have to buy a 3G kindle. I do have a kindle and love it but dont use the library as there are so many cheap books to be bought I dont think I would use £50 a year.0

You can buy books if you've got a PC and you plug the Kindle in can't you? Or I guess you could buy books on your PC and wait until you access to free wifi (pub, library etc) and sync it there.0
