Finance Charges

I have a finance for a college course I started just over a year ago and my direct debit got cancelled due to them not setting up a proper mandate.... so ive been paying by debit card and been overdue all the time by a few days, due to paying by card.

payed yet again on the day saturday the 14th when my bill was due and the guy on the phone said it all went though. the following thursday I got a letter through post with yet another 22.50 charge for been overdue. I rang them up and they said its because it takes 3 days for a debit card transaction to clear, so they charged me again...even though they knew I payed it on that date.

I've now got nearly £300 worth of fines because of this and I want to do something about it. Can i claim by them been unlawful? and the fact its there fault my direct debit got canceled or is it too late to act? Is it different from claiming from a bank?

Hi I'm just angry with them after reading your experience!!

They clearly set up your mandate in a way which meant they could excuse stealing charges/your money from you on a regular basis. Highway robbery of the highest order. One company which once did this
    to me---Clydesdale finance---
ended up having to pay out compensation once I contacted the financial ombudsman about it......they only paid a measly £20, but at least they knew I was on to them as well as a few others.
You need to follow Martin's claim procedure and get your money back ASAP, oh and post notice about the procedure on the college notice board, and send it to the naitonal union of students so that others in your situation can also get their money back........................
