Carpeting over dusty floorboards

Hi Just about to have carpets fitted in a house we have been renovating.
The floorboards are quite dusty from the plastering etc. I have hovered and removed any lumps of plaster.
The carpet fitters are going to lay paper. My question is should I spend time getting the floorboards as clean as I can or is that the point in laying the paper?

That's the point of laying paper.
Go over the floorboards with a damp mop and the vacuum and that should be fine.
Any lumps of grit though may cause lumps under the carpet.A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.0 -

The point of laying the paper is to seal the gaps between the floorboards or else dirt will come up through the floorboards & mark the carpet over the years.
The paper is not used to cover cr*p on the floorboards which should be cleaned as best you can.

Really? How will the dirt come up the floorboards, pass through the underlay and then end up marking the carpet?0 -
It's true when you vacum it draws the dirt up through the underlay and carpet if you don't lay paper first. I have seen light coloured carpets wrecked because they didn'tt have paper. This is also why I am being so paranoid about it!0

Thats it....our light coloured bedroom carpet was a right mess after 10 years.
Vacuuming sucks right though the carpet & underlay.
Also the air movement in the space between the floor & ceiling can be quite considerable in some houses.0
