When to Switch?

Hi,
I've been on Npower go fix 8(?) for the last year, and they've written to me to tell me my fix will end in Feb 2013 and I will be moved to a new tariff which appears to be about 50% more than I pay today!
A quick look around tells me I could save up to 300 a year by switching, so when should I start the process to move? Obviously I want to stay on my fix as long as possible, but want to switch as close to the end date as possible.

If you switch before the end date then you may be charged an ETC, it depends on the T&C''s of your tariff.
A switch typically takes 4-5 weeks. so I'd say commence the switch on 1/2/13 to be safe.
No tariff is 50% higher than the cheapest. You can move onto the next cheapest NPower tariff at the end, rather than Standard, but of course that may involve a lock-in too.No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
I'd assumed that the tariff they were moving me to was probably not in my best interests :-)
OK, having checked into this the fix runs out 3rd Feb, and I do have to pay a small exit fee of £20 per fuel if I leave early, so I think i'll commence the move end of December
Appears the electricity is where the big change happens. Current cost is 10.66 p KW but it will become 15.080 - the change in gas price is only 3.389 moving to 3.660.
While I'm looking is there any thoughts out there on fix or not?0
