Dilemma with bond maturing

We have a bond maturing later this month, 100k.

Since interest rates are dire, I am seriously thinking of a buy to let property. We had a couple in the past, no bother with tenants but sold them to do other things.

However my O.H. says that house prices are still falling and doesn't want the bother of it all.

I still think a flat in our local area, rather than an older terraced house would be a good way of getting a better interest rate than what is around.

The maturing bond money will probably sit in an existing account paying 3.2% which finishes in February 2013, so I suppose there is no mad rush, especially since one of us is a non-tax payer and hopefully next year the limit on cash ISAs will rise but that still leaves a large chunk to sort out.

Before any replies , We do not want to play the stockmarket. That is a definite no-no for us.

Can I ask why the stockmarket is a no-no but a geared BTL investment isn't?

The phrase "Playing the stockmarket" implies gambling. A well balanced portfolio should never be a gamble.
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.

I guess if you prefer the higher risk of a geared BTL investment then it would be.

Plus, I wouldnt want to play the stockmarket either. Most people do not. However, have you considered investing on the stockmarket instead? There are investments there which should suit your high risk thinking.
