Hi

Was in Poundland this morning and they have some 7.8 litre bins with handles and lockable lids, which look like they would be good for Bokashi composting. They are Plastic 5, which is food grade (used for microwaveable food), so they should work with EM bran.

Given that a dedicated Bokashi bin is nearly £50, I am going to try them. Four diffferent colours. I am buying the sludgy brown ones as they will not contrast with the brick building.

If you have a check on the https://www.recyclenow.com site and put in your postcode in the home composting area you can find out if there are cheap Bokashi bins in your area. It will also tell you about normal composting bins as well.

I will be ordering a 2 bin system (18 litres with taps) and some bran for £25. I will also be ordering a Can O Worms wormery with 1000 worms for £66 - which reminds me, best go and do it now.

Edit: Just ordered the Bokashi system - it was £24 with a £1 discount and free delivery, so £23 in all. Completely forgot about the wormery, muppet that I am.

Do they have a drain tap on the bottom? Or somewhere flat enough to add one?
  • Lots of composting items available at vastly discounted rates, if you're lucky. If you local council has signed up for the scheme you can can 330L compost bins for less than £10, a pair of bokashi bins for £25 and a Can-O-Worms wormery for £60. Delivery is free and you get £1 off each online order.

All the above info was correct for my area (North Lincolnshire council), hopefully it's the same for all members of the scheme.

Most councils will be in the compost bin offer (upto 3 bins for my area yay!). Sadly very few do the wormeries or Bokashi bins yet. Alot are still trialing them.

I'd love to get a green cone. Does anybody have one and can comment on how good it works?

Ordered 2x 330l bins from recycle now today-delivery within 28 days. £10-00 each. Some London boroughs do them for £5 but you have to be resident. The bins are heavily subsidised to make them cheap and encourage people to take up composting and recycling, though I heard a rumour today that the subsidy for recycle now is being reduced in the next few months and the prices are going to go up so get in early.....
  • I've just heard from my local council waste management dept that the prices on the recyclenow.com will increase at the end of this financial year (i.e. end of March). They are likely to to double.

I have just ordered myself a pair of Bokashi boxes and a can-o-worms system. The attraction of the Bokashi system is that it will take ALL food waste inc. cooked and meat. After two weeks that can be added to the wormery (apparently)

So that should reduce my black bin waste down to next to nothing.

For the last year I have had an open compost heap in the garden, but this winter some rats decided to take up residence (plentiful food + shredded paper makes for a nice home).

So kitchen waste will now go in the Bokashi / wormery systems with the compost heap being used just for garden waste (grass / hedge cuttings). The shredded paper will be used in both systems to stop them getting too damp.

Has anyone else had success with using Bokashi and a wormery?
