Old Paint.

I've got several tins of emulsion paint (some Dulux and B&Q) that are up to two years since originally opening. The contents seem to have a watery layer on the surface and smells odd but not putrid. Should I pour off the watery stuff or stir it in, or should I get fresh paint ?

Make sure that the lids are still on tightly then give the pot a good shake for about a minute. You should find that the 'water' has remixed itself and the paint is then perfectly okay to use. The liquid is what carries the pigment and so is an essential part of the mixture.

Thanks Paddy'smum. I thought perhaps the liquid was from condensation and would spoil the paint so I'm glad you've explained the technicalities of paint formulation. I wish the manufacturers would give this sort of advice on the tin.
