Hi, I now there are a lot of threads about laptops/netbooks/tablet etc bu cant find exactly what I'm loking for.
I'm looking to ge my 10 year old daughter something (like above) for Christmas. I use a mibile broadband dongle on my laptop and would use this to put films/games music etc on her device as I don't want her having unlimited access tothe internet on her own. We go away for weekends in the summer and hate lugging around dvd's etc.
What would be the best thing to get for this.
I have no idea what I'm looking forso any advice would be greaty received, TI x

Does your daughter have an iPod Touch ?
If not then I would suggest starting there (with a good case for when it gets dropped).
I wouldn't have got my son a laptop at age 10, he used a desktop set up where I could see what was going on until he was 13 and now he has a laptop he knows I'm still watching what he is up to (!)
If you really want to get a laptop for a 10 year old, then looking at something like an Acer Aspire One could be a good idea.
There are much better laptops around but at that age it would have done everything my son wanted (and for a couple of years afterwards).
With the rate of change and the risk of breakage I wouldn't pay more.0 -
Thanks, I will hav a look at those xx0

I have had a look at those in the shops today and are wondering if the screens are a bit too small for watching films?0

They are a bit small for films, having said that my son watches loads of stuff on his iPod Touch, the BBC iPlayer works well on it.
If watching DVDs is the main purpose then I suggest you forget about the laptop and buy a portable DVD player such as ( http://www.tesco.com/direct/tesco-7-portable-dvd-player-tc7pdvd/215-3800.prd ) and get a zip up case for the DVDs !0 -
Thanks, she has had 2 of those and as good as they are I wanted something that I download games and music on as well as watching films....I'm a fussy soandso I know!!! I think that I will look at laptops as £300 for a tablet is not happening!!!0

When you say watch films on, how do you propose to get the films on to the laptop?
You said you hated lugging DVDs around. You can't just copy films off DVD onto the laptop as DVDs have some sort of copy protection to prevent this.
It can be done but it takes some effort and the right software. If you are planning to subscribe to something like Netflix then that's different, all you need is internet access and the subscription. One by one the penguins are slowly stealing my sanity.0 -
Personally would get tablet...0

I will use my mobile internet dongle. I was thinking of getting a second one for her but I want to know what she is looking at. I was looking at the kindle fire but again it may be too small and I believe I can't use my dongle with them??0

Getting digital copy of dvd onto netbook or hard drive is actually very easy, especially with a lot of new films, as the major film companies now realise that that the film will end up on the computer, so most now provide a digital copy of it for you to download straight to your PC.
As for games, will depend on the games. If flash based then tablet is not best way to go as the latest andriod does not support flash. Plus if you though netbook screen was too small, then tablet will be the same as most are 7 or 10" screen's.
So if need bigger screen then it will be a laptop.
As for using mobile broadband for getting films, then expect to pay a small fortune for data usage.Mansion TV. Avoid at all cost's :j0 -
Thanks for all your help. I thin k it will have to a laptop and DVD's. I have just been looking at laptops and didn't realise they were so expensive!!! It will have to be combined Christmas/Birthday!!!
Thanks again all xx0
