Just put an ordinary lock on your door then. Then you won't be clearly demonstrating that you don't (or aren't prepared to) trust them an inch.

I'm with the OP here. When you live in a house share, you're at the mercy of your housemates and whoever they bring home - a potentially unlimited number of complete strangers. I think it's normal in a house share to lock your room, including when you go to bed at night, in case you're woken up by several strange men around your bed because your housemate's drunken friends blundered into your room at 3am (this happened to me). Lock the door.

Complete sell fit kit if you can use a chisel or get a half someone to fit it.

Only if you are locking yourself in.

    It works from either side.
Look at the link again where the green arrow is it says ...'Go ahead & enjoy peace of mind'
That is on the outside of the door.

There was a thread about exactly this sort of thing a few weeks ago and someone suggested this:

    http://www.templock.co.uk/

You can use it whether you arer in or out of your room (I use it when I am in my house overnight on my own so that no-one can enter my bedroom when I am asleep).

It fits most doors I think but you need to check it is suitable for yours.
  • Hmmm, finally some suggestions. :)

The templock is a bit unsightly, the stopngo lock is a bit of a hassle, but I quite like the idea of these 'fob entry' systems, they don't look horrible, and if I could get a good deal then I might be able to put them on my housemates rooms for them too if they want, we could all pretend we're on Star Trek lol... :)

I note that all options so far are about the physical door locks - did anyone have any suggestions about the webcam idea?

Yes. I suggest that if you tell your housemates about your plan to install webcams, then shortly afterwards you will be looking for some new housemates. No one's going to believe that you aren't doing this just to spy on them, and I don't blame them.
What have you got in your room that they will be so interested in (on second thoughts, don't answer that)?
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

I also think internal CCTV is certain to creep people, I also think it a poor deterrent - if you physically secure the room you remove both temptation and opportunity in one go, if what is in there is so private/precious to you it also means if an intruder other than a housemate enters the property - it will make their time harder too as its another delay/hassle to break into.

Presumably whilst your in the house the rooms don't need to be secure they can be 'on the latch' so its only whilst your out or when you come in you would need to arm/disarm.

Even a simple code lock would suffice as most I have seen can be latched off after unlocking.
