Aviva Car Insurance - Return Certificate

I cancelled my car insurance with Aviva a week ago. I'd traded in the car which the policy was for, and as there were only a couple of weeks to go (6/12/12), I got quotes for my new car and went with Churchill.

I phoned Aviva and cancelled the policy. They've sent a letter today requesting, in fact more like ordering, me to send back the certificate.

I can't find the certificate, but as I requested online documents through 'MyPolicy' would I have been sent a printed certificate? I'm wondering if they're really saying if I printed off my own certificate, send it to them?

Thanks.
Nice to save.

If you've cancelled they normally require the return of the Certificate as there are circumstances that could cause them to have to pay a claim if you still possess it.

    Like what?

Don't the police check with the insurer directly now to confirm you are insured due to people buying insurance, cancelling it and then pretending they are insured by showing them the certificate?
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

Can't you just print another and send it to them (easiest solution)?

Failing this send them your confirmation that the certificate has been destroyed.

The RTA covers this issue (it states you must return the certificate - or a declaration that it is lost etc).

The refund/cancellation will be held up till this is resolved.

(By cancelling you will lose your ncd you would have earned had you remained with them for this year)

I'd already tried logging in to the account to print the certificate but it says I have no policies. As there were only a couple of weeks left, there wouldn't have been any refund due anyway. My no claims was already at 10 years.

Think I'll just send a letter saying I don't have the certificate any more and include the dealer acknowledgement that I've traded the car in to them.
    Nice to save.

Make sure their ncd proof shows your 10 years. (Their norm is to send a standard letter saying 5 years)

Although not necessary, I think Aviva still send paper certificates.

    From their FAQ's :-

Also, you'll get instant access to all your policy documents online (this may take up to 30 minutes from point of purchase) and your certificate of insurance will be posted to you within ten working days.

    Hi Nemo,

If you opted for online documents only, you won't need to print a copy of your Certificate of Insurance off and send it in. As you've stated, now that the policy has been cancelled your access to your policy online has been removed.

If you can email me the following details to social@aviva.co.uk, I'll be able to get this resolved for you.

    1) Your full name
    2) Date of birth
    3) Postcode
    4) Policy number

    Kind regards,
