Comet refusing to sell unless you give them your details

One of our local comets are about to shut and so they had a 70% off most things sale on. Popped in last night on the way home and picked up an item. We to pay for it but they requested my name and address "for the guarantee". I declined for two reasons, firstly, I do not like giving out my details unless I have to and secondly Comet will not be providing any guarantee given they will not be in existence by the end of the year. They refused to sell me the item unless I gave them my details.

Well, as I'm not psychic and don't propose to play guessing games tonight, I guess it'll just have to be one of life's mysteries why they wouldn't sell whatever it was to you without you giving your details, then.I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.Yup you are officially Rock n Roll0 -
Why not make up an address?I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.0

There was absolutely no need for that comment. I wasn't asking anyone to play guessing games. My point was there were requesting all the details of all the customers purchasing anything from them. If you refused they refused to sell the item. Now, pre collapse Comet didn't ask for that level of detail. If you bought a toaster you didn't need to given them anything other than payment. I don't like companies keeping lists they don't need. In particular they are collecting information without informing you how they will use it which is a breach of data protection act.0 -
My ex bought me a memory stick (8GB) from Comet this week, it was a bargain at £1.99, he mentioned about being asked for his address, he just gave a house number and post code and that seemed to be enough, it was manually written down by the salesman.
The only thought he had was maybe Comet will be giving the manufacturers the details because Comet haven't paid for goods, so the manufacturer can chase people up for another payment. I hasen to add it is not a good idea to let him think on things, he generally comes up with tripe most of the time!0 -
Perhaps there is some sort of requirement from the administrators to prove the goods are being sold legitimately given the situation.
I'm only thinking aloud here though, so could be talking rubbish.Herman - MP for all!0 -
If you don't like it just go somewhere else.

My parents got several lots of post from Comet for a Mr Jones at their address. It was probably a neighbour because the address was right, including the postcode. Over a couple of years he bought a TV, washing machine and a couple of other bits.0
