  • If your ipod was an original Apple purchase and is less than a year old, Apple will replace it (should). I bought my son an ipod 4th gen from a random seller on ebay in May, it developed problems and I took it to the Genius Bar. I had no receipt and obviously wasn't the original purchaser. They replaced it with a new one. The ipod that I had bought was purchased in Jan 2012 so the warranty ends Jan 13. Hope that helps.

If you only bought it in July then it's still under warranty and Apple will replace it.

    Or

Is there an Apple store or an Apple Reseller in your area? They may be able to help. Have you posted in the Apple Discussions forums, you may have to subscribe but they are very helpful? Here

Are you trying to do this over USB1 by any chance, rather than USB2? I think I was having a timeout when trying to restore an iPod nano over USB 1. Changed computer and it wiped it fine first time. Try it on a different computer if you can.

also, try installing a different version of itunes (ideally older version). This worked for me when I was given an ipod. It wouldn't do anything at all other than show the apple signal. Took me a good 3 hours to fix, but eventually with a different version of itunes it did the trick!
  • Itunes is evil.
  • I have seen in the past the same error when itunes bits & bobs become corrupted and showing the same unknown error message as your getting...
