Egg/Barclaycard question

Hi,

I had an egg account for many years. Sometime in 2011, they ''locked'' the account meaning that I couldn't use the card anymore. However, there was still ~£3000 on the card that I was paying off in small instalments.

In Nov. 2011 the account was transferred over to Barclay's, as was the direct debit instruction, so that then I was paying the monthly minimum to Barclay's rather than Egg. However, I received NO information from Barclay's (no agreement to sign, no account number, no login details for online banking etc.). As a result I've had no control over my account for just over a year.

I let it go on so long partly because for a while I was just expecting to hear from them + I did a lot of travelling.

Anyway, I finally got round to calling them and I now do have login details for my account. But a whole year went by when I didn't, so I couldn't increase my payments or pay off the entire debt---they just took the minimum out of my account. As a result I've paid A LOT of interest.

I wonder whether since they didn't send me the details I needed to control my account I might be able to claim (some of?) this interest back? If so, how might I go about it?

Thanks in advance for any help and sorry for the long post.

Why did you not ask for this a year ago?

You made the choice not to contact the company and gain control of your finances.

A simple phone call to change the amount a year ago ..... etc

you want to be refunded for your mistake?

Yes I agree I made a serious mistake. But doesn't it seem somewhat poor practice on their part to be taking money from my bank acc. without sending me any details allowing me to take control of the debt?

As an aside, it was not a simple phone call to get things going again (since they hadn't given me a card/account number or ANY information there were significant problems with retrieving the original account. I had to jump through a number of hoops having to do with verifying addresses and such).

Perhaps I'm wrong but it strikes me as totally unacceptable that they can take money (and interest!) from me without sending me any details (even if I made matters worse by procrastinating).

You could have had control over your account quite easily - by contacting Barclays when you knew your debt had been transferred to them.

You said you've been doing a lot of travelling, are you sure they didn't write to you while you were away?

I'm afraid I can't see how you would be able to claim any interest back, as you could have increased your payments but chose not to do so.

Everyone with an Egg card was contacted by Barclays when the cards changed over. By letter and email. It was quite a simple procedure to access your account at the time. Even i managed it.

I was a similiar position to you. I ran my Egg card account badly and when the card expired Egg didn't replace it. However, I did get an email telling me Barclaycard was buying Egg cards, it was also on the Egg website when I logged in to check my account/statement. I did get a letter from Barclaycard giving me a new account number and telling me to continue with the card as normal. That was a laugh since they didn't replace my expired card either so I couldn't log into my account online, although that was fine by me as I was debt busting.

I too had a minimum payment DD set up. When I was in a position to make overpayments I phoned Barclaycard and they gave me the account number, sort code and told me to use my card number as the reference. I let the DD remain as a minimum payment. If I made an overpayment before the DD was due, the DD wasn't taken.

I appreciate you didn't get the letter with your new card number, however, it was you alone that decided to leave it a year before investigating. Despite having no card and no online access to my account, I recently paid off my card.

To summarise if I can do it with limited info and one phone call I doubt you will get a refund.
