Gas

Hi All

Just had piped propane gas fitted to our estate and central heating installed by the housing association.

Had my first bill from British Gas yesterday. Seems a bit high to me. £42 for 8 days.

The cost is 8.301p per Kwh for the first 683 and then 3.807p per Kwh thereafter.

I haven't had gas before. Do these prices seem reasonable?

By the way; we cannot change supplier. Our gas is supplied from 3 large tanks that are piped to various properties in the town and British Gas own the whole system.

Many thanks
Paul

Considering you can't switch then you'll have to pay what they ask or not use it. The rate seems reasonable anyway. When you say the first 683 what period is that supposed to cover? What do the annual primary units add up to? Is it charged seasonally i.e a higher charge in winter than summer? I doubt that would be the 8 days that the bill says as that would be over 31,000 per year.

Due to the fact that it's your 1st bill, you will be paying the higher rate for all your useage in that period which is why it seems a lot. Based on mycalculations = £42 for 8 days = £5.25 per day, which is roughly 63kwh per day. Acceptable useage in my opinion.
Once you reach the lower unit charge, your costs will reduce.
    Let me explain:
In each quarter I pay higher rate gas for the 1st 670kwh and 225kwh of electricity.
I take weekly readings and keep a log of the costs.
    For example - 4th Nov - 10th Nov I used 585kwh costing £46.80 (higher unit price 8p) however 18th Nov - 25th Nov I used 575kwh costing £23.00 (lower unit price 4p).
Take weekly readings and work out your costs. It's a 5 minute job and it means as well as keeping an eye of your useage, you know what costs you're incurring too.
    Hope that helps.

Sounds very reasonable. You don't say where you live, but a mains supplied BG customer on Standard tariff (not available to new applicants) in the Eastern region would pay:

8.072 p for the first 670 kWh per quarter, and 4.532 p thereafter
