Focus advice

51 Ford focus 1.6
Hi, couple of problems with it and hope someone can advise,
Air Bag light keeps coming on and going off,
Door open sign coming on and going off and when it comes on the Heater Fan goes off (which only works on number four, I replaced the resistor pack and it fixed it but it went again about 2 weeks later)
Now Car has started juddering when going through the Gears (mainly 2nd and 3rd)
My main concern is expense, thanks.

    Battery or alternator issues?

    You need a code reader to see what code is coming up for the airbags.

    There is a box on ebay called an F-Super it will read and reset codes on your car and read ABD and airbag faults. You need a laptop with USB ports though.

    Was the resistor pack new? Test it and see if thats the issue. Is the motor OK? Not drawing too much power?

    Switch in the door lock or boot switch.

    Juddering through the gears, Again makes me think voltage issue or a failing coil pack. Voltage issues will cause similar problems though.

    Could easily be down to a bad connection to the battery or negative/ground/earth somewhere (likely to engine block)

    No it is when accelerating, also I have noticed today that it is when the door open light comes on that it judders.

    Also r.e the Resistor pack, yes it was new (from Fords but that was done a few months back and I didn't bother to replace it a second time in case I just wasted more money)
  • I have been advised to get a new coil pack and try that but I am not sure if my Focus is a mark 1 or 2 ? Also there has been a lack of power and a clicking sound on acceleration which stops as I ease off the accelerator and my doors keep locking as I am driving...hope this coil pack is the right thing ?

    Unless your 2001 Focus was built in 2004 or later its a MK1.

    MK1 = 1998 - 2004
    MK2 = 2004 - 2011
    MK3 = 2011 onwards

    Coil pack wont be the cause of the locking issue. Faulty central locking module or voltage issues as i put previously.

    Have you tested the battery and alternator outputs? Checked for loose battery connections and loose or corroded earth wires?

    If its misfiring your pushing unburnt fuel through the exhaust, Damaging the CAT and using more fuel than you need to.

    Its costing you money not fixing it.

    Get a cheap voltage test meter or an OBDII meter. It takes a lot of guessing out of some diagnostics.
    They are not a 100% answer though. It just tells you where to start looking.

    Check the battery and alternator 1st...

    Try some of these.
    Airbags, unplug connectors under seats, clean with switch cleaner and toothbrush, re-clip.
    Heater , pollen filter blocked burning out resister pack, replace or remove pollen filter, replace resister pack.
    Clutch / judder, leaking rear seal, oil on clutch ?
    Other general electrics, poor earthing connections / bad battery.
    Be happy...;)

    Just an update in case it helps others... fitted new coil pack myself and car is now running like a dream and the Engine light has gone of also seems to have resolved all of the other issues too. (except of course the Heater which is a different issue )
