Supporting wall

HOw do i know if a wall is supporting or not. I want to knock through the bathroom and seperate toilet. I dont particularly want to pay a structural engineer. Shall i just go for it? Di i need building regs?

Hows best to start. Hammer and chisel and go mad???? Should i be cautious of anything apart from the light fitting?

Any help would be great

thanks,

  • Get a man in or risk coming home to a pile of rubble where your house once stood.
Nothing to see here, move along.

If it's a supporting wall it will need B Regs to remove it so best to find out before you take it down rather than after unless as OP said you want to come home to a pile of rubble!
  • I'd seriously be getting a structural engineer in. Cost me £250+VAT to get the calc for my wall. As said above, if it is loadbearing, you need building regs, they'll likely want to see the calcs for the RSJ/padstones etc.

Thanks for replies. Best i leave it i think!!! grr its upstairs and runs opposite to the floor boards. It is above the wall in the hallway so im assuming it is going to be load bearing.

any idea of a price. I can knock it down and put door etc in just need someone to put me in an rsj by accounts!

do i have to apply for building regs?? how long does this take?? can i do work and get it retrospectively?

    thanks

Remove it and, if the house collapses, then you know it was a supporting wall.
