Seller marked as paid, and now I can't.

Morning,
I bought an item and the seller has marked it as Payment Sent and dispatched the item to me.
I have not paid, but would like to.
I have changed the item to "Unpaid" but Ebay says that I have already checked out so won't let me pay.
Any ideas other than sending a payment direct through Paypal.
If I do send through paypal, am I still protected if the item does not turn up as I don't think they have sent it recorded.
Thanks,

If the seller, un-marks it as paid & resends the invoice you can checkout, otherwise the only option is to pay via Paypal [pay for eBay items] & it will be covered under normal buyer protection0

He may want you to pay via paypal as a gift payment so as to avoid paypal fees.0 -
I am pretty sure he has dispatched the item. He sent me a message saying he thought it was fraudulent and that we both might move out, before he told me the address he had sent it to, which was mine. I have asked him to umark as paid, and resend the invoice.
Thanks everyone.0
