help with insurance costs

hi everyone I wonder if anyone can help me please:i have been with norwich union direct for a month and a half now.I have an imported car and to comply to british legislation had to make a few changes to it.Vauzall dealer did not have the last piece in stock so could not start the whole registration process.I just phoned up the insurance to cancel and they said that I have to pay an extra 30 % as I have cancelled it within the first year of insurance and it says in their booklet that I have to pay extra if it's a short term policy.It actually says in the book that I have to pay extra as it is a short term policy but does not specify how much.is this legal?How do I know it's 30%?help please >:( >:( >:(
