Questions to ask before you buy car insurance

Many of us have been stung by extra costs when we want to change or refund our car insurance policy. So i suggest when we are getting quotes, or before we purchase car insurance we ask:
1 / How much refund will be deducted if i need to cancel or change policy during the year (in £ )
2/ What will the administration fee be for cancellation.
3 / can we postpone a policy , for up to 3 months if our car is off the road.

Being clear on these questions at the beginning could save a lot of wasted money later.

  • I think all the insurers stuff you for cancellation fees..... but you are entering into a 12 month contract, so you should not be surprised to have to pay to terminate the contract.

Most people want a policy for a whole year and read the paperwork sent so dont get caught out.

More importantly for commercial clients, your broker should ask if you have any plans to change the business in the next 12 months, I deal with Motor Trade, so often ask if they have any plans afoot eg. adding courtesy cars, buying a recovery truck, expanding their business into a different field such as starting to sell cars, so accompanied and unaccompanied demo may be needed.

Get the annual additional premiums for any changes up front and prior to renewal or taking out a new policy, so there are no hidden shocks and the insurers haven't got you by the nadgers 4 months down the line.
