At risk of redundancy question

Hello all,
I work within the NHS and have been issued with a letter to inform me I am at risk of redundancy which could happen anytime between now and next april.
There is another NHS Organisation with posts available and we have been told we must apply for these as they are suitable alternative employment, else risk losing our redundancy if any.
My question is can they insist I apply and take that post before I know what is happening to my current post.

This is one of the dodgy areas.
Untill the redundancy is confimed and you are put on notice you still have a job why would you ned to appply for another one.
If they are suitable alternatives then they should be offering the jobs and going through a selection process if there are more than one suitable candidate that is going to be made redundant, you should not have to apply.
If you apply for the jobs before being on notice this just becomes another ordinary job application, losing some of the rights like 4 weeks trial, protection of wages.
Its seems to be a common practice like the apply for your own jobs before they are even redundant approach often used.
It would need a more informed option on the best way to deal with this.
edit:
Forgot to add, how many involved, this determines the minimum consultation, and you need to challenge why your current job might be redundant first before needing to consider suitable alternatives.0
